Atticus Finch

Rumors were wrong. She sailed 1000 miles through the middle of 3 Great Lakes and 3 of their storms, even assisted the Coast Guard in a rescue in one of them. She made the trip from Port Dover, ON to St. Joseph MI in July of 2005. I loved Port Dover, and still reflect fondly on those years preparing the "Finch" for the voyage.

Summer 2005 freighter cruise onboard Ziemia Cieszynska by Chris Rombouts. (Part 1)

Ziemia Gornoslaska

I did the same trip on the Gornoslaska in the same summer as Chris. I encountered less rough weather in the Atlantic but never made Cleveland as the Gornoslaska dropped her rudder at Valleyfield. I was transferred by road to the Iryda at Sorel but then only got as far as Oshawa as the Iryda was ordered back to pick up the disabled Gornoslaska's cargo at Valleyfield. So though I never made Cleveland, let alone Duluth which was my final destination, I did get two passages through the seaway on two different ships. These photographs are great; Chris is an excellent photographer. Brought back fantastic memories.

This is the cabin from the tug James Battle. Jeff Thoreson photo, I believe, from 2002, but it hasn't changed at all.

It must have taken very brave men to sail into Lake Superior on a boat like this.
